As a renowned "motorcycle kingdom", Vietnam is advancing transportation electrification. Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) have become the preferred choice in Vietnam due to multiple core advantages, effectively meeting local travel needs and boosting Vietnam's environmental transformation and industrial upgrading. Key strengths include policy synergy, leading technology, high cost-effectiveness, localized services and ecological co-construction, delivering multi-dimensional value to Vietnam.

Analysis of the Core Advantages of Vietnam's Import of Electric Vehicles from China

As a world-famous 'motorcycle kingdom', Vietnam is undergoing a profound transformation in transportation electrification. In this process, Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) have become the first choice in the Vietnamese market with multiple core advantages, which not only accurately meet the travel needs of Vietnamese people, but also help Vietnam achieve environmental transformation and industrial upgrading. From policy coordination to technological strength, from cost-performance advantage to localized services, the value brought by Chinese EVs to Vietnam is multi-dimensional and profound.

I. Policy Dividends Support, Unimpeded Market Access

Policy coordination between China and Vietnam has built a convenient bridge for EV trade. Currently, the Belt and Road Initiative is deeply aligned with Vietnam's 'Two Corridors and One Economic Circle' vision, and production capacity cooperation is continuously deepened, creating a favorable policy environment for Chinese EVs to enter the Vietnamese market. More importantly, under the framework of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Chinese enterprises setting up factories in Vietnam can enjoy zero-tariff export policies, which directly reduces import costs and enhances product competitiveness. At the same time, to promote the new energy transformation, the Vietnamese government has launched a clear phased 'motorcycle ban roadmap', specifying that fuel-powered motorcycles will be prohibited from entering the downtown area of Hanoi's First Ring Road starting from 2026, and subsequent bans will be gradually expanded to major cities nationwide. Supporting incentive policies such as vehicle purchase tax reduction and exemption, low-interest loans, and registration fee subsidies have also been implemented. These policy dividends accurately align with China's mature EV supply capacity, removing policy barriers for China's EV exports to Vietnam.

II. Leading Technological Strength, Products Adapted to Local Needs

After 30 years of industrial accumulation, China's EV manufacturing industry has reached a world-leading level, especially in core components such as controllers, motors, and batteries, with significant competitive advantages, completely reversing the negative impression of 'low price and poor quality' in the early years. Targeting Vietnam's hot and humid, rainy, mountainous and muddy climate and road conditions, Chinese brands have specially customized adaptive models. For example, Yadea has launched waterproof models whose battery packs can pass IP67 waterproof testing and operate normally in waterlogged sections; intelligent vehicle systems and AI navigation functions of brands such as Ninebot and Niu Technologies accurately meet the pursuit of a sense of technology among Vietnamese young consumers. In addition, Chinese EV enterprises have grafted mature technologies in the new energy vehicle field to two-wheelers, launching graphene batteries, intelligent interconnected control systems, etc., making EV performance comparable to fuel-powered motorcycles. Key indicators such as cruising range and acceleration capacity can meet the needs of urban commuting and short-distance travel in Vietnam.

III. Prominent Cost-Performance Advantage, Aligned with Mainstream Purchasing Power

The dual advantages of price and usage cost make Chinese EVs an economical choice for Vietnamese people. Compared with the price of Vietnamese local motorcycles (20-50 million Vietnamese dong, equivalent to about 6,000-15,000 RMB), the price of Chinese EVs is generally around 14 million Vietnamese dong (equivalent to about 4,200 RMB), only half the price of similar Japanese products. In terms of usage cost, Chinese EVs have more advantages: the annual electricity cost is only 4% of the fuel cost of fuel-powered motorcycles, the overall usage cost is less than one-third of that of fuel vehicles, and they are simple to maintain with low failure rates. Motors generally provide a 5-year warranty, which greatly reduces the subsequent investment of consumers. This combination of 'equivalent performance and halved price' accurately hits the needs of mainstream consumer groups in Vietnam, such as middle school students, college students, and middle-aged and elderly women, and has become the core driving force for their popularization.

IV. Deepened Localization Layout, Comprehensive Upgrade of Service Guarantee

Chinese EV enterprises have long surpassed the simple 'product export' model and provided full-chain service guarantees for Vietnamese consumers through in-depth localization layout. On the production side, enterprises such as Yadea and Luyuan have introduced the latest production lines to Vietnam and built production bases in regions such as Bac Giang Province, with annual production capacity gradually increasing to 2 million units. This not only avoids tariff barriers, but also can quickly respond to market needs and adjust product designs according to local user habits. On the service side, Chinese brands have extensively laid out sales stores and maintenance outlets in Vietnam. Currently, Yadea has set up more than 400 stores nationwide, trained local technicians, and promised 2-hour after-sales response, solving consumers' worries about 'difficulty in maintenance'. At the same time, enterprises have launched flexible policies such as 'trade-in' and 'installment payment' in conjunction with local financial institutions, and through an integrated online-offline sales model, realized 'viewing cars online and picking up cars offline', combined with services such as door-to-door delivery and free license plate registration, greatly improving the convenience of purchase.

V. Ecological Co-construction, Helping Long-term Industrial Development

Chinese EV enterprises not only export products, but also take the initiative to participate in the construction of Vietnam's electrification ecology to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. Faced with the bottleneck of insufficient charging infrastructure in Vietnam, Chinese brands have gone overseas in conjunction with domestic charging equipment manufacturers to participate in the construction of public charging networks, and drawing on the experience of domestic battery swapping models, assisting local exploration of battery swapping services to solve the problem of time-consuming charging. In the field of battery recycling, relying on mature technologies, Chinese enterprises have docked with the Vietnamese government to participate in the construction of a waste battery treatment system, promoting the formation of a value cycle of 'production-use-recycling', which is in line with the renewable energy development goals in Vietnam's Eighth Power Plan. In addition, the localized production of Chinese enterprises has also driven supporting industries such as batteries, plastic parts, and controllers to settle in Vietnam, creating more than 3,000 jobs, improving the supporting level of Vietnam's local manufacturing industry, and winning government support and social recognition.

From policy adaptation to technological empowerment, from cost advantages to ecological co-construction, Chinese EVs provide a comprehensive solution for Vietnam's transportation electrification transformation. With the acceleration of Vietnam's electrification process, Chinese EVs, relying on profound industrial accumulation and precise localization strategies, will surely achieve broader development in the Vietnamese market, and at the same time inject sustained momentum into Sino-Vietnamese production capacity cooperation and industrial coordination.
